History of Tapas

The history of tapas, a traditional Spanish dish, is not very commonly known, despite tapas increasing in popularity across the world.

How tapas came to be is in fact quite an intriguing story.

You see the word "tapa" comes from the Spanish verb “tapar” which in Spanish literally means a “cover” or “lid”.

Manchego Cheese and Spanish Ham The term "tapas" is derived from the old habit of placing a slice of bread or a piece of ham or cheese on top of a wine glass to keep the flies and mosquitos out.

Nowadays in Spain, they don’t use slices of bread or a piece of cheese to keep the flies out of their drink ... but we are all familiar with the term "Spanish tapas" ... so what do we mean by “tapas” today?

If you are lucky enough to visit Spain, I would highly recommend you try out the tapas ... and if you visit a typical Spanish bar you might even get them free!
